Rent or purchase Unacceptable Levels. It’s a story about the chemicals in our bodies, how they got there, and what we can do about it.
Films like this raise awareness, change consumer buying patterns and can ultimately be part of the solution (e.g., protecting small-scale, eco-friendly farming).
Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) also raises awareness, changes consumer buying patterns (farm to consumer) and is part of the solution since FTCLDF protects pasture-based farmers that use non-toxic methods.

WORRIED ABOUT TOXINS? WE ASKED THE DOCTOR
Interview with Dr. Ron Schmid
Elly and Dr. Ron on the farm |
To coincide with the release of Unacceptable Levels, we asked FTCLDF donor/member Dr. Ron Schmid, a naturopathic physician since 1981 and owner of Dr. Ron’s Ultra-Pure, some questions of our own.
Tell us about your practice and products.
I’ve been in practice since 1981, as a naturopathic physician with a general practice in Watertown, Connecticut. I’ve seen all types of issues over the years, and a big part of my work now is with our online store, Dr. Ron’s Ultra-Pure, the additive-free company.
What kind of problems related to toxins do you see in your practice?
Toxicity is part and parcel of losing health. When I start to work with a patient, detoxifying is part of what needs to happen.
I’ve found that the Dr. Weston Price diet, which emphasizes high quality animal fats, is critical to restoring health when toxins are a factor since most toxins are stored in the fats. As patients turn to quality fats in the diet, it helps them detoxify naturally.
Toxins are, for the most part, fat soluble, so changing the diet helps the body lose the old fats and replace them with healthy fats. That change happens in every cell of the body, as each cell membrane contains fats. So, a diet high in healthy fats—whole raw milk from pastured cows, quality raw milk cheese, eggs from chickens on pasture, raw butter and organ meat from grass-fed animals—is going to help everyone on the cellular level.
While diet is primary, high quality supplements are additive, especially those that contain only the nutritional ingredients on the label, nothing superfluous such as magnesium stearate, binders, lubricants, coatings, fillers, GMOs or other ingredients commonly added to supplements.
How can you tell if someone has a toxic overload?
I look for symptoms or a constellation of issues. We use blood tests and also hair analysis, to identify various toxic levels excreted in the hair, including toxins like mercury and lead.
Many people have a hunch they may have toxic overload, because of lifestyle, where they lived, what they’ve been exposed to. So, it’s not necessary to test separately since one can surmise certain things. Actually, testing might not change what I do very much.
Is there a common health challenge that folks would be surprised to know is caused or exacerbated by toxins?
What I see often is fatigue or gastro-intestinal disturbances. Those kinds of vague symptoms are contributed to by toxic overload, but it’s fairly unusual to see symptoms directly related to toxins. I don’t want to play down the toxin problem, but toxicity is usually not the presenting problem.
As people clean up their diets and eliminate refined foods, most toxins take care of themselves. Detox is a benefit of the right diet and right supplements.
What are the three top sources of toxins you advise your patients to avoid?
1. Seafood: As much as I like seafood, I think it’s not good to eat too much. For example, tuna and swordfish are full of mercury, and shellfish can be a problem, too.
2. Water: Be aware of where your water comes from.
3. Commercial-grown food and the Standard American Diet.
What are the most important detox tools?
1. A diet rich in quality animal fats.
2. Supplements containing iodine to “clean house” as you go along; for instance, we carry two special products, Sea Vegetables Plus and Iodine Complex. Iodine is extremely useful in detoxing the body and has a natural detoxifying effect. It will pull radiative elements out.
3. Milk thistle and other supplements to help the liver, the organ of detoxification.
4. Pure water.
5. Reasonable aerobic exercise. Sweat helps the body detoxify.
So, it’s important to pay attention to diet and take quality supplements to keep those toxin levels down.
Why do you emphasize organ meat glands in your product line?
As part of a healthy traditional diet, organs and glands are very important. Our supplements are a great way to get these organs and glands into the diet. We source them from grass-fed organic animals raised in New Zealand. The supplements are additive-free and freeze dried, which preserves the vast majority of the nutrients.
Therapeutically, each gland can help build health in the corresponding gland. For instance, using pastured animal liver will help our liver—same goes for adrenals, helping our adrenals. Also, we’ve seen benefits of using brain for brain problems many seniors are facing.
Thank you, Dr. Ron Schmid!
The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund thanks Dr. Ron Schmid for being a FTCLDF member and supporting the FTCLDF with quarterly donations. He donates 5% of profits from Dr. Ron’s Ultra-Pure online sales to the FTCLDF, Price Pottenger Foundation, The Weston A. Price Foundation, and other nonprofits.
“Who’s Your Farmer?” is our slogan. We help farmers get their products directly into the hands of consumers. This direct relationship benefits consumers immensely as they can ask useful questions like:
“What chemicals do you use to grow your vegetables or livestock?”
“Do you use pesticides, herbicides, fungicides?”
“What preservatives do you use in your artisanal food products?”
“Do you use GMO feeds?”
Many of the farmers FTCLDF protects are pasture-based, providing the very healthy traditional fats that Dr. Ron says are essential for health and natural detox. Also, FTCLDF supports non-toxic farming methods, and asks every farmer this question in the membership application:
Do you use NATURAL, NON-TOXIC, SUSTAINABLE farming practices (i.e., refrain from using herbicides, pesticides, GMO seeds/feeds; routine use of antibiotics, hormones; and following CAFO practices)?
