April’s Member Monday!

By Suzanne Sisk | April 4, 2022

The first Monday of each month is Member Monday where we feature a member photo or video on our Instagram and Facebook pages. Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) is proud of our members, and we take great pleasure in highlighting their operations and the awesome work they are conducting in sustainable farming, animal husbandry, artisanal production, and homesteading.

Fawn Crossing Farms

Fawn Crossing Farms lies on a ridge of 11 acres outside Harrisonburg in the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Bill and Sharon Theiss own and operate the farm and keep honeybees, Rouen and Muscovy ducks, purebred Nubian goats, and Gloucestershire Old Spot heritage pigs.

They work hard to diversify the heritage pig genetics and to save this endangered, very gentle, and delicious breed of swine. This farm is one of a small group of farms on the East Coast committed to breeding Gloucestershire Old Spot heritage pigs. Selective breeding of registered animals helps maintain diversified animal genetics for the future and is one cornerstone of their farm philosophy.

Bill was an only child and always had some kind of pet to keep him company. Fawn Crossing Farms is his chosen occupation leading into retirement, with a goal to produce environmentally sustainable and high-quality products in a humane and ethical manner; the welfare of the animals and the local environment being the top priority. Happy and well cared for animals produce delicious food that supports their land and their community. Fawn Crossing Farms is a net carbon neutral operation, using wind, solar PV, solar hot water, and geothermal renewable energy technologies.
