The first Monday of each month is Member Monday where we feature member photos or a video on our Instagram and Facebook pages. Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) is proud of our members, and we take great pleasure in highlighting their operations and the awesome work they are conducting in sustainable farming, animal husbandry, artisanal production, and homesteading. See above for June’s member photos!
Radical Roots
Today we are featuring Radical Roots Farm in Connecticut!
Radical Roots Farm is family owned, and woman and veteran operated by Ryan and Alycia Salvas in Canterbury, Connecticut. Ryan’s deployment to Afghanistan and the inability for them to get pregnant sent the Salvas searching for a lifestyle change. They quickly discovered ridding their lives of chemicals and nourishing their bodies was the answer.
“Radical Roots” is the term they came up with to express that they raise their animals in a different way than most. They practice low-input regenerative farming–without the use of harmful pesticides, GMOs, and unnecessary hormones. They go back to the “roots” by raising heritage livestock, focusing on quality and flavor, rather than fast-growing, flavorless meats.
They are very much stewards of the land; instead of depleting nutrients, they are constantly focused on improving the land they utilize. They raise free range and GMO-free turkeys, chickens, goats, sheep, hogs, and cattle. Their main cattle breeds are Lincoln Red and Scottish Highland, while their hogs are comprised of Registered Mulefoot and Red Wattle. They always raise heritage breeds of livestock and most can be found on the Livestock Conservancy’s list of Endangered Breeds.
