***MD - ACTION ALERT***

A bill legalizing cow shares is in the Health and Government Operations Committee

Delegate JB Jenning's bill, HB1080, legalizing cow shares, is in committee right now.  Your calls matter more than you would believe!!  Please contact the committee members immediately to express your support of HB1080.

Background:  In April 2006, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene changed Maryland regulations to redefine a cow share as a sale of raw milk, specifically to make cow shares illegal. Until then, cow shares were a good means for Maryland consumers to obtain raw milk from their own dairy animals. We have been working for the past two years to regain access to raw milk in Maryland.  Recognizing the right to contract with farmers in a cow share is a great first step.  When this bill passes, we will once again have the choice of getting our fresh milk in Maryland by engaging with farmers to keep and care for our dairy animals.

ACTIONS:

1. Call, email, or fax the members of the House Health and Government Operations Committee and ask them to SUPPORT cow share bill HB1080 (contact info below) When you call or write, please emphasize that you'd like the choice to be able to obtain your milk from within state.  Please also emphasize the business that you are taking to other states.

2. Call and email or fax Delegate JB Jennings and thank him for sponsoring the legislation [email protected]  (301) 858-3698

You can use the wording below as a guide for your email  (please add your own words expressing why you care about access to fresh milk with a focus on choice and economics)

"I support HB1080, introduced by Del. JB Jennings. Please vote FOR HB1080.  I support the right of farmers and consumers to engage in contract.  The passage of this legislation will create untold economic opportunity for Maryland farmers.  Thank you for your support."
